State of the Universe
Well the state of the universe is that uh you know Michael said yesterday that we want to
be at 20 bugs by the end of the day so that he can believe well be at you know week
from today and the reality is well our bug count went up because laughs we found
5ome bugs we werent tracking correctly and part of that is my fault because hadnt
mentioned it to Michael kind of regret
that now uh the other thing is that some of these
bugs are turning out to be lot harder to get
closure on cause they involve third parties and
licenses and uh some of the other ones involve just very very tedious things we have to
do to the source to get you know like credit right or cleaning right we have to go over
and find somebody else who wrote the code originally and tell us is this OK can we
distribute this its really nutty thing because you know if we screw this up Barksdale
goes to jail or something right Laughs So weve got to be really careful And so thats
the status so were actually were doomed were doomed right now and uh but yoT
know its Netscape and being doomed is like you know its Friday were doomed
whens dinner its just something that happens so guess uh 3-30 when the pointy
heads get in room then well panic appropriately right now Im trying to get out of the

hair of all of the engineers so they can like uh do the typing and yeah yeah yeah yeah
get back to work they can actually fix the probljright urn and uh several of us
particularly Tara and will probably have to sit down and go over some of the bugs and
make sure that they really are things
that we have to panic about and well adjust the
priority
levels accordingly yadda yadda yadda
Oh yeah Daves going to give me big thank you Well well it was good sign this
morning guess it was because Michael had bagel in him that you know he didnt
slump like an animal taking bullet after we did that work and you know we added up the
numbers and it was 104 he sent the message of doom to everybody who had bug on the
list so everybodys falling over themselves trying to fix the situation And we also have
the issue is that you cant actually clear he bug out until like you check the change into the
tree right and the tree is currently horked which you know is technical term for
.currently horked so lot of cant get lot of the engineers cant get
into the tree to
check the bug in which will then allow thern to close the bug as fixed right so were in
this nutty state for while so when the tree is less horked you know the engineers can get
in and and sometimes its serial sometimes its asynchronous process or whatever
get in and then we can get some of these closed out suspect by the end of the day theyll
be significant number of bugs that are close but were not going to be close to 20
Yeah its sort of li well get to state where we have small number and then we all
become members of the secret service following the president around and you look for like
the gun man on thagralsy knoll and you wrestle him to the ground you just kind of like
you know everywhere and thats when its actually little easier the transition when
youre doomed and youve got to get it down urn thats the hard thing and so mean
lot of this were not sleeping welt this week suspect
well probably wont sleep well
next week So Im going to make sure my staff at least gets break this weekend and

can come back little recharged and refreshed on Monday Because the reality dont
want anybody to hear this but the 14th date is like little artificial it gives us plenty of lea
way but you like to have that much lee way just in case the obvious goes wrong And
were still really doomed became the license in not final and we cant get bunch of people
to sign on the dotted line So suspectfjts going to be real WPW1LLaL_r_--- Mw

Urn yeah its urn well whos really going to be sucked to be is David because hes
gonna have to come up with story on some of the XP sanitization because were kind of
strung out there but yeah it pretty much sucks to be us but dont want to weight..you
know take the world you know Im really glad Im not the legal staff at Netscape
because you know Im getting some sleep dont think Mitchell has slept in three weeks
laughs so it really sucks to be them
Yeah the can kick us around but you kno we knew the job was dangerous when we
took it so what are you going to do Thatihe job they gave us well do it and we all
like believe this is really good thing to do And so in Silicon Valley and Netscape
fashion we1ltMt4k At the last minute And well kill some brain cells and you know
life will be better Its like Ijust want to live til April Fools Day We all thought is was
really funny that they decided to do this and that the next day after this was going to be
-AttFo4Day-.wbs just yet another irony So think lot of people are gonna Im
really looking forward to detoxing the first week of April stacking paper and unstacking
it doing something kinda dull for little bit Actually thats probably going to happen
because as told other people yesterday was trying to slap people in line to get them
moving on something said you realize were all just going to be burnt out and zoned on
3-31 and were going to think that were done and the Net get its and the Net is well
rested theyve got like 10000 questions April 1st when they see the code and

everybodys going to have to be alert and upon usenet and 1000 points of light you

know from2erba are going to have to be in place and answering questions and it really
will suck to be us but it will also be cool nobody will have ever pulled quite
this loony
stunt before and its going to be really really fun to be its really really fun to be here at
Netscape and in the arena in the arena and watching it happen you know its you
know like being spectator at the car crash laughs4iing one of the vehicles Im
looking foard to it its going to be lot of fun
Laughs What do do to unwind Il give you an example last weekend actually flew
down to Southern California to visit my mom and took my 10 1/2 year old son there and
felt so bad because all did down there was sleep hadnt seen my mom in months and
all did down there was sleep But usually what try to do cause Im really such terrible
husband and father lately because during the week the hours are so extreme you know you
have to flog the employees so much urn that try to hold Saturday and Sunday free and
do all the thingsfhe hardest thing is when you have to work really hard Friday night and
you have to be up Saturday morning and you have to be you know Dad and hubby and its
sometimes hard to make the transition like know this Saturday morning 900 oclock Im
going to take my son to baseball practice and stuff like that But Im really looking
forward to that because they dont care about what it is that do or they dont necessarily
understand at all mean my son thinks work at place where we have lots of nerf guns
and video games and big lizard hat walks around every once in while He thinks daddy
goes to play and he wonders why Im gone so much and he likes it when Im home and
try to make that really special when am But hobbies Whohas time for hobbies 1w
Back before hurt my back played golf when had plenty of time and Im looking
forward to doing that again its not always like this its like this or times year its at
this level of intensity

Do you guys know how far away live live in the hills above Hayward live in um...so
yeah4eah Im in the East Bay but thats not nearly the commute compared to Scott
righ Scott is in this cubicle over here hes not here right now hes flying
in tonight in
the mi dle of the night ub he commutes from Michigan So hes back in Michigan on
whats called we like to call them of his conjugal visits hes back seeing he wife and kids
and stuff like that And the poor beggar hes been uh hes been keeping some really
weird hours hes been trying to keep hes one of the Mac engineers and hes helping
and Chris Yei out trying to constantly resurrect the Mac build along with uh uh Mike
here..
